Nicole Jacquelyn is a new author to me, I found her on Goodreads when I was looking for a book that was angsty and a he doesn’t want her troupe. This book ticked these boxes perfectly.
I loved Katie she was so kind, selfless, maternal and caring. She looks after the children of her deceased friend. The father Shane is someone she had a crush on when she was a teenager who she had an unrequited love for. She gives her all to everyone she loves especially the children who she loves as if they were her own. An example of this is the scene where Shane takes the children away to California away from Katie in Oregon and both Katie and the kids become so upset, in emotional pain and crying. This showcases the strong bond that they have.
Shane the love interest is in my opinion a douchebag who is self-centered, uncaring at the beginning of the book. Throughout the book he becomes more self-aware and more aware of the things going on around him which changes his perspective on what his marriage was like and what his wife was really like. He became more considerate and loving and a great father who is both physically and emotionally present.
I loved how protective Katie’s siblings were of her and how involved and concerned they were in her physical, emotional and mental wellbeing. Shane and Katie’s relationship is a difficult one that changes as they each decide what they both want and deserve in a relationship.
This book was full of angst and was a rollercoaster of emotion. It showed us the reality of relationships and how difficult it can be.
This book is perfect for people who love angsty slow-burn romances.
